Setting Up Xello Lessons for Michigan's CDM

This simple guide shows you how to set up Xello’s Lessons to support the Career Development Model (CDM) and ensure your students meet the requirements of Michigan's Educational Development Plans (EDP) and Talent Portfolios.

Lesson Sequence

In your Lesson sequence, the Lessons below are to be marked as Core. Lessons marked as Core are front and center on students’ dashboard and can be filtered in Lesson Progress reports.

Custom Lesson Guide

You can use these examples to develop your Xello Custom Lessons to ensure your students meet the requirements of Michigan's CDM.

Custom Lesson: Create your talent portfolio

Instructions for Students (Copy and paste into your custom lesson)
You will create your talent portfolio to collect and present information and artifacts you’ve gathered to demonstrate your talents and skills. Not sure what to include? Think about things you’ve done or experienced that you feel proud of. What have you worked hard to accomplish? Think about your interests, achievements, and experiences. How can you share or provide evidence of them? Let’s start by creating your portfolio. You can continue to add to it and update it over time.
  • On your student dashboard, click View Portfolios, then click Add Portfolio. You can also view sample portfolios for ideas on how to set yours up.
  • You’ll need to enter a title and a description for your portfolio. Your first section will be an introduction to your portfolio, so add a section, give your Step 1 a title, and select Text Entry for Step 2. See the example below:
    • Title: My talent portfolio
    • Description: A portfolio of my skills and talents
    • Section Step 1: Introduction
    • Section Step 2: Overview of your talent portfolio
  • Once you have completed the introduction section of your portfolio, add a second and third section. You will choose the topics of these sections. See the ideas below to help you get started:
    • Related videos
    • Articles used for research
    • Related Xello activities if applicable
  • Once you have created your portfolio in Xello, answer the following question in the text box below:
    • How could a portfolio displaying my skills and talents help me in the future?

Custom Lesson: Update your talent portfolio

Each year you’ll review and update your talent portfolio to reflect on and add information and artifacts you’ve gathered to demonstrate your talents and skills. Not sure what to add? Think about things you’ve done or experienced that you feel proud of. What have you worked hard to accomplish? Think about your interests, achievements, and experiences. How can you share or provide evidence of them? To access your portfolio select View Portfoliosfrom your student dashboard. You can also view sample portfolios for some inspiration.
  • Here are a few ideas of things you can add:
    • Photos and videos
    • Related articles
    • Related Xello activities if applicable
  • Once you have updated your portfolio in Xello, answer the following questions in the text box below:
    • How have your talents and skills developed since you last updated your talent portfolio?
    • What activities or experiences are you most excited to explore next?

Ensure the courses you’ve selected fulfill the graduation requirements and align to your career and post-secondary education goals. Each year, you will come back to your Xello course plan to re-evaluate your course selections and modify based on your updated plans.
